2005 Central Bank of Ireland 10 Euro Silver Proof Coin.  28.28 g.; 38.61 mm; Sterling Silver .925 Fine.  Edge grained.  Bicentenary of the birth of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, design by Michael Guilfoyle.   2005 marked the bicentenary of the birth of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Ireland's greatest scientist, and has been designated by the Irish Government as "Hamilton Year 2005: Celebrating Irish Science".  In lucite screw holder in plush fitted case of issue with certificate.   30,000 issued.

The coin pays tribute to Hamilton’s use of algebraic equations that revolutionised mathematical physics. His understanding of symbols and mathematical language is represented by a decorative circular pattern formed from these symbols. At its centre is the Nabla, the symbolic operator introduced by Hamilton to represent any arbitrary function.   The symbol is so called because of its visual resemblance to the Egyptian harp of the same name.Celebrates the accession of ten new countries to the European Union.  Ten stars around above the swan.  The harp of 14 strings with EIRE 2005 around at the bottom, and THE HAMILTON YEAR OF SCIENCE around at the top.
